1913 US Open Golf

The 1913 US Open Golf tournament has been labeled as “the greatest game ever played”, due to a playoff and win for an amateur golf player. Francis Ouimet, sometimes referred to as the “Father of Amateur Golf”, won the 1913 US Open Golf tournament at age 20 in his first try over British professionals Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, who happened to be his idols. Ouimet was the first amateur to win an US Open Golf tournament. His impossible 1913 US Open Golf tournament win had humble beginnings. Ouimet learned the game as a caddy at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, where the 1913 US Open Golf tournament was played.

At the end of day one in the 1913 US Open Golf tournament, Ouimet was in seventh place, four strokes behind the leader. The second day of the 1913 US Open Golf tournament saw Ouimet shoot the lowest morning round to place himself in a three-way tie for first with Vardon and Ray. On Saturday, the last day in the 1913 US Open Golf tournament, the three-way tie playoff began. After the first eight holes, there was a three-way tie again. At the tenth hole, Ouimet was ahead by one shot. By the time the three players made it to the 17th hole at the 1913 US Open Golf tournament, Ouimet stretched the lead to three strokes. Ouimet never turned pro, and in 1949 he started Ouimet Caddie Scholarship Fund to provide college scholarships for caddies from underprivileged families. 1974 marked the year that Ouimet was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, for his play in the 1913 US Open Golf tournament, and his amateur play over all.

With Ouimet’s 1913 US Open Golf tournament win, the perception of the game changed. Golf was no longer seen as just a game for the old and rich. The number of golf players tripled after Oiumet’s 1913 US Open Golf tournament win. 1913’s US Open Golf tournament led to growth in golf’s popularity and was also seen as a turning point in the history of golf in America.
