The 2008 Olympic Games will be held in Beijing, China, from August 8 through August 24, 2008. Beijing is a northern metropolis city, and the capital of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC). The host of the 2008 Olympic Games is the second largest city in the PRC, population wise, after Shanghai, and is seen as the political, educational and cultural center of the PRC.

The 2008 Olympic Games are officially known as the “Games of the XXIX Olympiad”. Because of the number 8 being the symbol of prosperity in Chinese culture, the 2008 Olympic Games’ opening ceremony will take place at 08:08 p.m. and 8 seconds. Some of the 2008 Olympic Games sporting events include football (soccer), sailing, beach volleyball, and swimming’s new marathon 10 kilometer race.

Tickets for the 2008 Olympic Games are selling fast. China put 2.2 million on the market in early April-May, and within a month, 230,000 people booked that million, 15 months before the 2008 Summer Games begin. 2008 Olympic Games tickets for the opening ceremony, basketball, and diving have been the top sellers so far. Ticket prices for the 2008 Olympic Games are fairly low, compared to the prices for the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia and Athens, Greece. The price reduction is due to Beijing having an annual income less than the people in those cities.

Public transportation in the host city of the 2008 Olympic Games has been a topic of concern, but the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) assures Olympic goers that everything will be in place come July 2008. The subway system is undergoing a major over hall. Added to the three lines and 64 current stations, will be seven other lines and 80 new stations, including a direct link to Beijing Capital International Airport. On the ground, Beijing plans to assign 38 official public transit routes that link the 2008 Olympic Games venues. During the 2008 Olympic Games, 2500 large buses and 4500 mini-buses will be used to take 2008 Olympic Game goers to and from event sites. Metro cars are to be upgraded as well with video screens showing the latest updates from sporting events.
