2012 London Olympics
The 2012 Olympic Games will be held in London, England from July 27 through August 12, 2012. London is one of the foremost global cities in the world, and the largest financial centre aside from New York City. Central London is home to the headquarters of more than half of the UK's top 100 listed companies and more than 100 of Europe's 500 largest. The city's influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, the arts and culture in general contributes to its global position. It is a major tourist destination for both domestic and overseas visitors. London has a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, and more than 300 languages are spoken within the city. It has been an influential city for two millennia and its history goes back to its founding by the Romans, which was then named Londinium . The city's core, the ancient City of London, still retains its limited medieval boundaries. However, since at least the nineteenth century, the name "London" has also referred to the whole metropolis that has developed around it.
The focus of the London 2012 Olympic Games will be the Olympic Park in east London, which will house the new sport venues. The Olympic Park is located in the Lower Lea Valley - an area of great untapped potential. Major renovations are being completed in order to present the best possible venue; London now officially being a third-time host to the Olympic Games after being the site for the 1908 and 1948 games as well.
Tickets for the 2012 Olympic Games are selling fast. An estimate of some 7.7 million tickets would be available for the Olympic Games and 1.5 million tickets for the Paralympic Games. They will be going on sale in 2011; with at least 50% of these priced under £20. To reduce traffic, ticketholders would be entitled to free use of London's public transportation network on the day of the event.
Public transportation in the host city of the 2012 Olympic Games has been a topic of concern; however the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games assures attendees that vast improvements are currently underway. These including the expansion of the London Overground's East London Line, upgrades to the Docklands Light Railway and the North London Line, and the new "Javelin" high-speed rail service, using Hitachi 'bullet' trains. They also plan to have 80% of athletes travel less than 20 minutes to their 2012 Olympic Game event. The Park would be served by 10 separate railway lines with a combined capacity of 240,000 passengers per hour. Park and ride schemes also feature amongst the many plans aimed at reducing traffic levels during the games.
