The American Music Awards, otherwise known as the AMAs, was created by Dick Clark in 1973 to compete with the Grammy Awards, after its' move to
Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond co-hosted the first AMA Awards show. During the first decade of the AMA Awards, there were multiple hosts, each representing different genres of music. Currently, there is one single host. From 1973 to 2003, the AMA Awards were held in mid-to late January, but moved to November, not to compete with other major award shows, such as the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.
AMA Award winners are determined by a poll of music buyers, 20,000 to be exact, each year, and are awarded based on popularity. Music genres featured in the AMA Awards are: Pop/Rock, Soul/R&B, Country, Adult Contemporary, Contemporary Inspirational, Rap/Hip-Hop, Heavy Metal, Alternative, and Latin. The categories in each music genre are: Favorite Male/Female Artist, Favorite Group, Duo, or Band, and Favorite Album. The AMA Awards don’t have an award for Best Single/Record. AMA Award winners receive a pyramid-shaped crystal trophy, and speeches are limited to 45 seconds each.
