The Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards is an annual awards show featuring the year’s biggest television, movie, and music acts which are voted on by viewers of the Nickelodeon cable channel. Numerous celebrity guests and performers attend the live show to present awards and join in on the fun.
The Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards go outside the box of a typical award show by using creative aspects to draw in the younger audience. Rather than using a classic envelope to discover the winners, the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards sometimes uses balloons, T-shirts, models, giant letters, and other inventive techniques. In 1990, the now-familiar orange blimp award was introduced as the new prized trophy.
In 2002, Nickelodeon launched its new World Record Slime Stunts as part of the entertainment. Olympians, extreme sports superstars, and daredevils all participate in unique stunts performed on stage involving trademark green slime. The first spectacular act was with David Mirra, when the BMX pro-biker broke his own record for a double back flip on a BMX bike and landed in a 5,000 gallon tank of green slime. Other celebrity participants have included champion skateboarder Tony Hawk, billionaire Donald Trump, and German supermodel Heidi Klum. The most recent Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards show in 2009 featured comedian-actor Will Ferrell sliding down a slime-covered slide placed on the UCLA campus head first into an enormous pool of even more slime.
The Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards are usually held in Los Angeles, California during springtime and along with an illustrious list of A-list celebrity attendees there is also live musical entertainment to be enjoyed by the spectators.
