The Emmy Awards are an American television production award show, the television equivalent of the Oscars. The Emmy Awards are broken up into two awards; the Daytime Emmy Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards. Related but separate organizations present the Emmy Awards: the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honors national primetime entertainment, excluding sports; the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences recognizes daytime, sports, new and documentary programming; and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honors programming originating outside the United States.

The name “Emmy” is a female version of “immy”, a nickname used for the image orthicon tubes in early television cameras. The Emmy Award itself is a statuette of a winged woman holding an atom. The wings represent the muse of art; the atom, the electron of science. The Emmy Award statuette was created by television engineer Louis McManus. Weighing five pounds, the Emmy Award statuette is made up of different metals-copper, silver, nickel-covered in 18 karat gold.

The first Emmy Awards took place January 25, 1949 at the Hollywood Athletic Club, and continued to be referred to as just the Emmy Awards, until the 1970’s, when the first Daytime Emmy Award ceremonies took place. The word “Primetime” was added to differentiate between the two awards shows. The Primetime Emmy Awards are presented recognition of excellence in American primetime television programming. The Emmy Awards generally air in mid-September, on the Sunday before the official start of the fall television season. Seen in rotation among ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX networks, the Emmy Awards are presented by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Eligibility for the Emmy Awards is from June 1 until May 31 of the following year. The nominees and winners are voted on by members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Members vote for programs and other peer categories of their expertise. Paper ballots for the Emmy Awards are sent to peers, including everyone eligible in that category. Top five vote getters are official nominees. The final Emmy Awards judging occurs with the Academy panelists. The panelists are solicited from the Academy’s National membership. Drama and comedy series nominees are required to submit any six episodes for the judging panels. All Emmy Awards judging panel votes are tabulated by accountants from Ernst & Young.

Here are the broad categories for Emmy awards: animation, art direction, casting, choreography, cinematography, commercials, costuming/costume design, directing, electronic camera work, engineering development, hair styling, lighting direction (electronic), main title design, makeup, music, nonfiction, performing, picture editing, program categories, sound mixing, sound editing, special visual effects, technical direction, video, voice-over performance and writing. And within each of the broad classifications, there are awards for achievement in more specific categories, such as "outstanding directing in a comedy series" or "outstanding lead actress in a drama series."
