The Golden Globe Awards are awards for motion picture and television programs, given annually during a formal dinner. The Golden Globe Awards are run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), and the broadcast ranks as the third most watched awards show each year behind the Oscars and Grammy Awards. Being one of the highest honors for actors and actresses, the Golden Globe Award is awarded early in the year, based on votes from roughly 90 journalists living in Hollywood. These journalists are affiliated with media outside the United States.

Of all the major Hollywood ceremonies, the Golden Globe Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards are the only award presentations that do not have a regular host, although there are presenters every year how introduce the ceremonies at the beginning of the broadcast. The “Rat Pack” (Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis Jr.) started that trend at the 1958 Golden Globe Awards, when they invaded the main stage. The next year, the trio was invited back. Since then, stars have been present at the podium.

The first Golden Globe Awards dinner was held in 1944 at the 20th Century Fox Studios. Only five categories were introduced at that year’s Golden Globe Awards: Best Motion Picture, Best Actor/Actress, and Supporting Actor/Actress. The Golden Globe Awards have been held at various locations throughout the next decade, i.e., the Beverly Hills Hotel, Hollywood Knickerbocker Club, and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The early 1950’s saw plenty of change at the Golden Globe Awards. First, the HFPA decided to establish a special award that recognized outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry, and named the award after its’ first winner, Cecil B. DeMille. The second change was doubling the number of film categories by dividing them into drama and comedy/musical.

1958 was the Golden Globe Awards’ first year it was televised, but the broadcast was only in the Los Angeles area. In 1964, the national broadcast began, during “The Andy Williams Show”. Since 1996, the Golden Globe Awards have been broadcast on NBC, and prior to that, the Golden Globes were on TBS. Before the existence of TBS, one of the three big networks televised the event.

The eligibility period for the Golden Globe Awards begins October 1. All HFPA members may vote for both nominees and winners. Golden Globe awards for film categories include: Picture (Drama, Musical/Comedy), Actor/Actress (Drama, Musical/Comedy), Supporting Actor/Actress, Director, Screenplay Writers, Original Score Composers, Original Song, Foreign Film, and the Cecil B. DeMille Award. The Golden Globe awards for non-film (television) include: Television Series (Drama, Music/Comedy, Mini-Series, or TV Movie), Actor/Actress (Drama, Music/Comedy, Mini-Series, or TV Movie), and Supporting Actor/Actress. The Golden Globe statuette the winners receive is a globe, encircled by a film strip, hoisted on a pedestal (marble block). The globe and the film strip are plated in 24 karat gold.
