The People’s Choice Awards is an awards show recognizing the people and work of popular culture. The show has been held annually since 1975 and is unique in the fact that the general public has a vote in deciding the award recipients. The People’s Choice Awards air on CBS and are produced by Proctor & Gamble.

The awards show creator, Bob Stivers, produced the first show in 1975, and within a quick three year time period had attracted 35.5 million viewers. Proctor & Gamble bought the show from Stivers in 1982 and became the first and only sponsor of the People’s Choice Awards.

The People’s Choice Awards are different from most Hollywood award shows. Up until 2004, the winners of the awards were selected through a Gallup poll of the general public. However, in 2004, the show dropped the Gallup poll and switched to a partnership with Entertainment Weekly magazine. Now, nominees are determined by a “front row panel of over 6,000 entertainment enthusiasts” recruited by Entertainment Weekly editors. The board has been described as a nationally represented sample of men and women ages 18 to 54 who are pop-culturally inclined to come up with a list of nominees determined by rating averages, box office grosses and album sales. The panel votes on the assorted categories, then the people vote via the internet for the winners.

The award categories have varied over the years. For example, the 16th People’s Choice Awards had categories including Favorite All-Around Movie and both a Favorite Movie Actor and a World Favorite Movie Actor. More recently at the 32nd People’s Choice Awards in 2006, several new categories were introduced such as Favorite On-Screen Match-Up which went to Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson for their work in the film “Wedding Crashers”. Also Reese Witherspoon was given the title Favorite Leading Lady, another new award.

The People’s Choice Awards are a live awards banquet where the audience really never knows what to expect. When comedian Jim Carrey won the award for “Liar Liar” for Favorite Comedy Motion Picture, he leapt up from his table, lifted his chair high above his head, and shook it about in manic glee as he danced up to the stage, finally hurling the chair ahead of him before bounding on stage to smother his producer in a mock passionate embrace. At the latest ceremony in January of 2009, the 35th annual People’s Choice Awards were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. Big winners this year included the movie “The Dark Knight”, singer Carrie Underwood, the TV show “House”, and actor Will Smith.
