US Open Tennis Tournament

The US Open Tennis Tournament has become the most exciting professional tennis event in the US; however, the US Open has not always been the exciting event it is today.  The first US Open tennis match was in 1881 at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island.  The first event was only a men’s singles championship.  The US Open tennis tournament continued to be held in Newport, Rhode Island, for the next 34 years.

Slowly, the US Open would add women’s singles and doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.  However, each of these championships was not initially played at the same location.

As US Open Tennis History continued, it was not until 1968 that the US Open consolidated all five major tennis events (men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles) all into one single tennis tournament held at the Westside Tennis Club in Forest Hills, Queens, NY.  The first US Open Tennis Tournament held in 1968 was won by Arthur Ashe.  An interesting piece of US Open Tennis history is Arthur Ashe, 25 years old at the time and a lieutenant in the US Army, was unable to collect the $14,000 first prize due to his amateur status.  Moreover, Ashe was the first American to win the US Open Tennis men’s singles title since 1955.

Interestingly, the first US Open Tennis Tournament played in New York offered a total of $100,000 in prize money.  Today, prize money for the US Open Tennis Tournament now exceeds $17 million each year making it the richest tennis event in the world.  Over $11 million of this prize money is given to the men’s singles and women’s singles draw.  Approximately $3.5 million is awarded to the men’s doubles and women’s doubles draw with only $500,000 allocated to the mixed double draw.

The US Open Tennis Tournament is one of the four major Grand Slams in professional tennis which also includes the French Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open.  While the US Open Tennis tournament is now held in Flushing Meadows, NY, the French Open is in Paris, France; Wimbledon in Wimbledon, England (essentially London); and the Australian Open is held in Melbourne, Australia.  The term “Grand Slam” originated in 1938 when Don Budge won all four of these tennis tournaments in one calendar year.  This was the first time is history for this accomplishment.
