The Wimbledon Tennis Championship, otherwise known as Wimbledon, is held every June and July in London, United Kingdom. It is the third Grand Slam tournament event, in between the Australian Open, French Open, and followed by the US Open. The Wimbledon Tennis Championship lasts two weeks, and is subject to extension for rain. Over 60 nations compete and millions of people pay attention to what is going on in London at the Wimbledon Tennis Championship.

The Wimbledon Tennis Championship features separate tournaments held at the same time for men’s singles, men’s doubles, ladies’ singles, ladies’ doubles, and mixed doubles. The Wimbledon Tennis Championship also showcases a youth tournament, with boys’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ singles, and girls’ doubles. A special invitation tournament takes place at the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, and it includes: 35 and over men’s doubles, 45 and over men’s doubles, 35 and over ladies’ doubles, and wheelchair doubles.

Within the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, there are 128 players in each singles event, 64 pairs in each single-sex doubles event, and 48 pairs in the mixed doubles event. Players and pairs in the Wimbledon Tennis Championship are admitted to main events on the basis of their international rankings and consideration is also given to the players’ previous performances at grass court events. 32 male and female players are given seedings in the men’s and ladies’ singles; 16 teams are seeded in the doubles matches in the Wimbledon Tennis Championship.

The Committee of Management and the Referee determine which players receive direct entrance into the Wimbledon Tennis Championship and give seeds to the top 32 male and females players and the 16 pairs in each double event. A majority of the players are unseeded. The Committee also admits wild cards into the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, based on how well those specific players performed during previous tournaments or how well those players stimulate public interest in the Wimbledon Tennis Championship. Only two unseeded players won the men’s singles in Wimbledon Tennis Championship history, Boris Becker in 1985 and Goran Ivanisevic in 2001. No women have won the ladies’ singles matches unseeded, but the lowest seeded woman to win the Wimbledon Tennis Championship was Venus Williams in 2005, as the 14th seed.

Single and double matches for men in the Wimbledon Tennis Championship are best-of-five sets. Matches in all other events are best-of-three sets. Most matches in Wimbledon Tennis Championship play are single elimination tournaments. The 35 and over men’s and ladies’ doubles are round-robin tournaments.

Wimbledon Tennis Championship play begins the Monday falling between the 20th and 26th of June or six weeks before the first Monday in August. There is no play on “Middle Sunday” because it is a rest day for all players competing in the Wimbledon Tennis Championship.

Trophies and prize money are a big reward for the winners of the Wimbledon Tennis Championship. Since 1887, the winner of the men’s singles Wimbledon Tennis Championship has received a silver gilt cup, 18.5 inches in height and 7.5 inches in diameter. The cup displays this inscription: “The All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Champion of the World”. Additionally, the ladies’ singles Wimbledon Tennis Championship winner receives a sterling silver salver known as the “Venus Rosewater Dish”, 18.75 inches in diameter. The salver is adorned with mythological characters. Winners of the men’s, ladies’ and mixed doubles matches receive silver cups. Runners up in each Wimbledon Tennis Championship match receive inscribed silver plates. The Wimbledon Tennis Championship trophies are presented by the president of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, The Duke of Kent and his sister Princess Alexandra, The Honorable Lady Oglivy.

At the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, more prize money is awarded to the men than the women, in the singles and doubles division. The mixed doubles pair is awarded the least.
