BCS National Championship Game

At the end of the 2006 regular NCAA college football season, a new era awaits. The BCS will introduce a stand alone BCS National Championship Game, which will occur one week after New Years’ Day. The BCS will use a “double hosting” format where there will be five BCS games, including the Allstate Sugar Bowl, FedEx Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and the BCS National Championship Game. The BCS National Championship Game will rotate and be played in one of the current BCS bowl sites, New Orleans, LA, Miami, FL, Pasadena, CA, or Glendale, AZ. The four BCS Bowls and BCS National Championship Game expanded the number of slots from eight to ten, creating more accessibility to those conferences outside of the six BCS conferences.

The BCS standings will determine No. 1 versus No. 2 match ups. Participants in the BCS National Championship Game will be the top two ranked teams in BCS standings, announced in early December. The standings are determined by polls and computer averages. Percentages from the Harris Interactive College Football Poll and Coaches Poll as well as computer averages are combined and tabulated to produce the BCS standings. The title sponsor of the BCS National Championship Game will be the same title sponsor that hosted one of the BCS bowl games. As a result, the 2007 game will be the 2007 Tostitos BCS National Championship Game.

The future sites for the BCS National Championship Game have been released. January 8, 2008, the BCS National Championship Game will be played at the Superdome in New Orleans, LA. On January 8, 2009, Dolphin Stadium in Miami, FL will be the site of the BCS National Championship Game. Finally, the BCS National Championship Game returns to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, on January 8, 2010.

The BCS made more changes for the up coming 2007 collegiate post season. They entered a four year agreement with FOX Sports covering all media distribution and sponsorship rights for the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, FedEx Orange Bowl, and the Allstate Sugar Bowl until 2010. They also have an agreement with FOX Sports on the BCS National Championship Game until 2009. Not only does FOX have all telecast rights, they also have radio, sponsorship, naming, and internet rights, along with many others. ABC will still broadcast Rose Bowl games through January 2014, and broadcast the BCS National Championship Game when it is played in Pasadena, January of 2010.
