One of the Kentucky Derby traditions is the Kentucky Derby Pie, a chocolate and pecan tart in pie shell with a pastry dough crust. It all began in Melrose Inn of Prospect, Kentucky. George Kern and his parents created the Kentucky Derby Pie, but at the time, each family member had their favorite names for the pie. Then the name Kentucky Derby Pie was pulled from a hat.
The Kern family made the Kentucky Derby Pie name a registered trademark of Kern’s Kitchen, the restaurant inside of Melrose Inn, in 1968. The company uses the Kentucky Derby Pie name in the form of “DERBY-PIE ®” in official literature and advertising. Kern’s Kitchen closely guards the trademark.
Alan Rupp, grandson of the elder Kerns’, runs Kern’s Kitchen and the production of the Kentucky Derby Pies. Kern’s Kitchen is the sole baker and distributor of the Kentucky Derby Pies. If anyone uses the “Derby Pie” label without permission, he sends them a letter explaining the Kentucky Derby Pie infringement rights. Rupp and his staff also bake 1,300 Kentucky Derby Pies a day, in the days leading up to the Kentucky Derby.
Churchill Downs has served the Kentucky Derby Pie for more than 20 years. On Kentucky Derby day, race track venders sell more than 25,000 slices, to go along with the many Mint Juleps sold.
Here comes the good part; the recipe to the Kentucky Derby Pie. Well actually, the real recipe is a secret to which only Rupp, his production manager, brother, ex-sister in law and a few employees know.
The best way to eat the Kentucky Derby Pie? Warm, topped with Kentucky Bourbon whipped cream. Enjoy!
