Anyone and everyone who has ever had a dream or wish to play football, and those who actually do, want to eventually become Super Bowl champions. Soon after that year’s Super Bowl is over, and when the NFL training camps begin in July, that Super Bowl champion ideal is drilled into the players by the coaches and by the team owners. The goal of the upcoming NFL season is to become Super Bowl champions, and nothing short of that victory.
The road to becoming a Super Bowl champion is long and hard. The NFL season is 16 games, and the playoff format for the NFL teams vying to get into the Super Bowl and become a Super Bowl champion is a single elimination tournament. There are 12 teams (six from each conference-AFC and NFC). Four division champions from each conference are seeded one through four, and two wild cards from each conference are seeded five and six. Seeds three and six and seeds four and five play each other in a “Wild Card Game”, while seeds one and two have a bye (an advance to the next round of the playoffs without playing). The winners of the “Wild Card Game” face seeds one and two in a “Divisional Game”. The winners of the “Divisional Game” play in a “Conference Championship Game”, and those winners play in the Super Bowl. The ultimate winner is crowned Super Bowl champion.
Since the NFL/AFL merger in 1970, there have been seven teams that have been Super Bowl champions three times or more, some of them consecutive times. The Green Bay Packers are one of those teams. They joined the NFL in 1921, and became Super Bowl champions by winning Super Bowls I and II, formerly known as the NFL-AFL Championship Game. Currently in the NFC North, these Super Bowl champions are the only non-profit, community owned major league pro sports team in the
“Raider Nation” is extremely proud of their team. The
The Washington Redskins joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1932, entered the NFC East, and became Super Bowl champions in 1982 at Super Bowl XVII. It was the Redskins first Super Bowl win in 40 years, and became Super Bowl champions twice after, in Super Bowls XXII and XXVI.
The most dominant team of this century, the New England Patriots, became the second team in NFL history to be herald as Super Bowl champions by winning three Super Bowls in four years, XXXVI, XXXVIII, and XXXIX. The “Pats”, as their fans refer to them, play in the AFC East, and joined the NFL in 1970 with the merger. They are also the 7th team in NFL history to become Super Bowl champions in consecutive years.
Give the San Francisco 49ers the title they deserve, “Team of the 80’s”, winners of four Super Bowls during that time period, XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, and XXIX. They joined the NFL in 1950, and currently play in the NFC West. The 49ers have the best Super Bowl champion record with no losses, and were the first team to become Super Bowl champions five times.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have become Super Bowl champions five times as well, in Super Bowls IX, X, XIII, XIV, and XL. Joining the NFL in 1933 as an expansion team and currently playing in the AFC North, the Steelers are the only team in NFL playoff history to become Super Bowl champions after being seeded 6th. They also are one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history, and the first team to win more than two Super Bowl championships.
There also are some teams in the NFL that have been in the Super Bowl, but have never been Super Bowl champions. The Buffalo Bills have four consecutive losses in Super Bowls XXV, XXVI, XXVII, and XXVIII. The Minnesota Vikings have four losses in the Super Bowl as well, in Super Bowls IV, VIII, IX, and XI. The Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles have two losses a piece, in Super Bowls XVI and XXII and Super Bowls XV and XXXIX, respectively.
These are the NFL teams that have never been to the Super Bowl: The Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the New Orleans Saints.
