Super Bowl Trophy

The Super Bowl trophy that is given to the winning team at end of each Super Bowl is the Vince Lombardi trophy, named after the legendary Green Bay Packers head coach/general manager. Lombardi led Green Bay to wins in Super Bowls I and II. The Super Bowl trophy was originally called the “World Championship Game Trophy” when the Super Bowl was the AFL/NFL World Championship Game. The name of the Super Bowl trophy was changed in 1970, after Lombardi’s death. Officially, the Super Bowl trophy, aka the “Vince Lombardi Trophy” was not presented until Super Bowl V (1971) when the Baltimore Colts played against the Dallas Cowboys.

In 1967, former Tiffany & Co. Vice President Oscar Riedner sketched a basic design of the Super Bowl trophy for then NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle. This is the Super Bowl trophy’s 40th year of being handcrafted by Tiffany & Co. at a workshop in Parsippany, New Jersey. Valued at $12,500, the Super Bowl trophy is 22 inches tall and weighs seven pounds.  The Super Bowl trophy embodies a regulation sized football in kicking position on a stand with three concave sides. The words “Vince Lombardi Trophy”, the roman numerals of that year’s Super Bowl, and the NFL’s logo are engraved on the Super Bowl trophy. Made entirely of sterling silver, the Super Bowl trophy takes four months and 72 man hours to create. The artists that participate in constructing the Super Bowl trophy specialize in spinning, silversmith-ing, chasing, hand engraving, and polishing.

 

Traditionally, the NFL commissioner presents the Super Bowl trophy to the winning Super Bowl team after the game is over. Since Super Bowl XXX (1996), the Super Bowl trophy is presented to the winning team’s owner on the field following the game. Previously, the Super Bowl trophy was presented in the winning team’s locker room. After the Super Bowl trophy is awarded, it is sent back to Tiffany & Co. to be engraved with the winning team’s name.

 

Just in case of trophy damage during the post-Super Bowl celebration, there is a back-up Super Bowl trophy. Un-like the Stanley Cup in the National Hockey League and the Grey Cup in the Canadian Football League, there is a new Super Bowl trophy created every year, and the winning team remains the permanent owner of that trophy.

 

Tiffany & Co. also designed the MVP Super Bowl trophy, named after Pete Rozelle. The MVP Super Bowl trophy was first presented at Super Bowl XXV (1991) to Otis Anderson, of the New York Giants, in Tampa, Florida, where the Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills 20 to 19. The MVP Super Bowl trophy is an 18 inch high shooting star. Handcrafted from 86 ounces of sterling silver, the MVP Super Bowl trophy is accented with vermeil (which is when gold is applied over silver).
