What goes well with an exciting Super Bowl win and the Vince Lombardi trophy? A Super Bowl ring. The Super Bowl ring is given to each member of the winning organization to memorialize their Super Bowl win. The Super Bowl ring tradition started in 1967, with Super Bowl I. The Green Bay Packers received the first Super Bowl ring, and it cost less than $1000 to make. Since then, the cost for a Super Bowl ring has skyrocketed. Now, the NFL pays for 150 Super Bowl rings, up to $5000 per Super Bowl ring. The NFL team owners contract directly with the ring designers, so if a Super Bowl ring price is over $5000, the ring company pays the difference and customizes that particular ring.
The well known high school and college class ring designer, Jostens, has designed 26 Super Bowl rings for the NFL. Jewelry companies Balfour and Diamond Cutters International have also designed Super Bowl rings for the NFL. Jewelry companies, who want to enter the Super Bowl ring design competition, start working on actual Super Bowl ring designs when they have ideas on which teams might be in the Super Bowl. The jewelry companies do not present Super Bowl ring designs until after the Super Bowl is over, as not to cause a jinx for either AFC or NFC competitor.
A Super Bowl ring is usually yellow or white gold, with diamonds and gemstones. The design of the Super Bowl ring uses the Super Bowl winner’s team logo, colors, and the player’s name. The Super Bowl ring also might include hidden meaning in numbers and types of gemstones used or the arrangement of those stones. One side of the Super Bowl ring is adorned with the Super Bowl symbol for that year, and the final score of the game. The other side is personalized by the player. Super Bowl ring-like pendants are also made for the player’s wives.
The loosing team from the Super Bowl receives a Super Bowl ring as well, but it is half the cost of the winning Super Bowl team’s Super Bowl ring. Many players choose not to wear those rings, because it symbolizes defeat.
Here are some facts about Super Bowl rings. William “Refrigerator” Perry, member of the 1986 Super Bowl Champion Chicago Bears, ordered the biggest Super Bowl ring size ever, size 23. Vince Lombardi’s Super Bowl ring from Super Bowl I is worth $100,000. The most valuable Super Bowl ring belongs to New York Jets famed quarterback Joe Namath, worth over $100,000.
