Thoroughbred Farms

Click here to view our Kentucky Derby Packages

In Louisville, Kentucky, the “Horse Capital of the World”, there are great Bluegrass farms that house thoroughbred operations. These thoroughbred farms concentrate on breeding and training thoroughbreds for racing. Thoroughbred farms have been apart of Kentucky since the region was established, and has been an important industry to the area. Thoroughbred farms are also a popular tourist attraction, and the 20th century thoroughbred Man o’ War serves as an example. Groom Will Harbut kept a ledger for Man o’ War after retiring to stud, and when he died in 1947, there were 63 ledgers containing over 1.3 million names. Daniel Boone even introduced a bill for “improving the breed of horses” at Kentucky’s first legislative assembly.

The state of Kentucky produces more thoroughbreds than any other state. Most Kentucky Derby winners are retired to the thoroughbred farms. There are 450 thoroughbred farms in the region (150 in Lexington/Fayette County alone). You should never drop by a thoroughbred farm; all thoroughbred farms are working farms. Visits or tours have to be by appointment or through arrangements with professional tour companies, such as On Point, who can provide customized thoroughbred farm tours. During the thoroughbred farm tours, you can revisit racing history, view gorgeous farms and barns, see Kentucky Derby winners, and discover a variety of horse breeds.

Here are some tips to use when on a thoroughbred farm tour.

-When visiting a thoroughbred farm tour, it’s customary to tip the groom or farm representative who showed you around, $5-$10, depending upon the time spent with you.

-In a customary thoroughbred farm tour, you can make pit stops or photo stops as much as you like.

-Wear comfortable clothes and shoes

-No feeding or petting the horses. They may kick or bite.

-No picnics

-You will not be able to sit on or ride the horses.
