Super Bowl VI took place on January 16, 1972, in New Orleans, Louisiana at Tulane Stadium. This was the sixth championship game of the recently formed National Football League. Super Bowl VI featured the American Football Conference (AFC) Miami Dolphins against the National Football Conference (NFC) Champion Dallas Cowboys.

Dallas (14-3) defeated Miami (12-4-1) in Super Bowl VI, 24-3, dominating Super Bowl VI the entire game. Dallas also set records in Super Bowl VI, for the most rushing yards (252), the most first downs (23), the least total yards allowed (185), and least points allowed (3). With the victory in Super Bowl VI, Dallas is currently the only teams to ever prevent their opponent from scoring a touchdown in the Super Bowl. Dallas quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Roger Staubach was 12 of 19 for 119 yards and two touchdowns in Super Bowl VI, and rushed five times for 18 yards during Super Bowl VI. Staubach was named Super Bowl VI MVP.

Here are some interesting pre-Super Bowl VI facts. After Miami won the AFC Championship Game (the game leading up to Super Bowl VI),  Miami’s head coach Don Shula received a phone call at his home from then President Richard Nixon at 1:30 a.m. about a pass play Nixon thought would work against Dallas in Super Bowl VI. When asked about Miami’s defense, Dallas head coach Tom Landry couldn’t recall any of the player’s names. That remark led to the Super Bowl VI nickname “No-Name Defense” for Miami.

The scoring summary for Super Bowl VI was:

First Quarter-Super Bowl VI

DAL- FG Mike Clark  9 yards  3-0 DAL

Second Quarter-Super Bowl VI

DAL- TD Lance Alworth 7 yard pass from Roger Staubach (Mike Clark kick) 10-0 DAL
