Super Bowl XXVI

Super Bowl XXVI took place on January 26, 1992, in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. This was the twenty-sixth championship game of the National Football League. Super Bowl XXVI had the National Football Conference (NFC) Champion Washington Redskins against the American Football Conference (AFC) Buffalo Bills.

 

Washington (17-2) beat Buffalo (15-4) in Super Bowl XXVI, 37-24. With the win in Super Bowl XXVI, Washington was the fourth team to win three Super Bowls, joining the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, and the San Francisco 49ers. The loss in Super Bowl XXVI cause Buffalo become the third team to looser back-to-back Super Bowls, joining Minnesota (Super Bowl VIII and Super Bowl IX) and Denver (Super Bowl XXI and Super Bowl XXII). Washington quarterback Mark Rypien was named Super Bowl XXVI MVP and the first Canadian born player to win Super Bowl MVP recognition. Rypien went 18 of 33 for 292 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Washington was also the first and only team to win three Super Bowls with three different starting quarterbacks: Joe Theismann (Super Bowl XVII) and Doug Williams (Super Bowl XXII).
