Common Misconception
A common misconception amongst many of today’s companies is that “in this Economy, people should just be happy to have a job”! What’s interesting about this viewpoint is that it reflects an inaccurate understanding of the current job market. The premise here is that the rainmakers of your organization, the overachieving grade A top performers…are NOT able to find another job opportunity. Pick up the newspaper today and you will quickly discover that there are companies all over the nation that are growing AND hiring in this Economy. Guess who their top prospects are for these new opportunities? You guessed it…your top performers! The very employees who have increasingly become disgruntled since your company cut back on “unnecessary expenses” like this year’s bonuses or Presidents Club, the company Christmas party or travel expense allowance and other perceived employee benefits.
Let’s face it, the employees who are fearful of losing their job in this economy are probably not the employees you want to retain anyway – they are probably fearful because they know their skill sets are not in high demand or they have become accustomed to doing the minimum required to coast along unnoticed within your organization and the mere thought of having to prove themselves all over again sends cold chills down their spine.
However, lets for a moment entertain the idea that the employees you want to retain are indeed “just happy to have a job in this economy”. What’s going to happen when the economy improves and everyone starts hiring again? Will any of your employees start updating their resumes and look for that next opportunity? How will the loss of your top employees impact your organization’s ability to take advantage of the economic recovery?
Now more so than ever, companies should take the time out to focus on the very assets that generate top line and bottom line growth…people! It doesn’t take much to make people feel valued for their contributions and commitment to the workplace – they simply need to receive some sort of recognition every few days. So…take a few moments and think about what someone at your office has recently accomplished that was exceptional or created value in your company. Next…take the time out of your busy day to recognize that employee.
Making it a regular habit to take the time to make your people feel valued may just be the difference between them staying put and surfing the job boards!
