The Australian Open Tennis Tournament is one of the four major Grand Slam tournaments (French, Wimbledon, and US Open), and held annually in Melbourne, Australia, in the middle of the Australian summer. In sequential order, the Australian Open Tennis Tournament is the first Grand Slam that occurs in the year, and takes place the last two weeks in January, formerly in December. This is the only Grand Slam that can be held indoors.

Technically, a achieving a “slam” refers to winning all four major Grand Slams in a calendar year. Recently, calling each tournament a “slam” is considered shorthand or a nickname for the four parts of a slam (Australian Open Tennis Tournament, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open). Australian tennis legend Rod Laver was the last to complete the Grand Slam in 1969 for the men’s singles event. Germany’s Steffi Graf was the last woman to complete the Grand Slam, in 1988, and earned a Gold medal in the Seoul Olympics that same year, making her Grand Slam a “Golden Slam”.

First called the Australasian Tennis Championship in 1905, the now Australian Open Tennis Tournament was played by top men amateurs. The Australian Open Tennis Tournament, then the Australasian Tennis Championship, occurred at Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground in St. Kilda Road, in Melbourne, and was organized by the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia. After a brief break because of World War I, the first women’s singles matches were added in 1922.

Renamed the Australian Open in 1927, during the first part of the century the Australian Championship toured the Australian states. 1968 marked a new era for Australian tennis; the championship became open to professional and amateur tennis players alike, thus the new name: Australian Open Tennis Tournament. The Australian Open Tennis Tournament featured men’s and women’s singles matches, men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles matches, junior and masters matches. After touring Australia for a better part of a century, in 1972, the Australian Open Tennis Tournament decided its’ home would be permanently in Melbourne, and in Kooyung Park. There were two Australian Open Tennis Tournaments in 1977, one in January and one in December. In 1987, the Australian Open Tennis Tournament moved back to January, so no Australian Open Tennis Tournament championship was decided in 1986.

The 1980’s found the Australian Open Tennis Tournament in a growth period. The Australian Open Tennis Tournament out grew its then venue, Kooyung Park, so the Australian government constructed Flinders Park. The first Australian Open Tennis Tournament in Flinders Park was held in 1988. The 1980’s was also a decade of European dominance at the Australian Open Tennis Tournament in the men’s singles, led by Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, and Stefan Edburg. That decade also saw world class collisions between Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert-Mill, both of whom won three and two Australian Open Tennis Tournament titles respectively.

The 1990’s were also good to the Australian Open Tennis Tournament. In 1996, the Australian Open Tennis Tournament’s then current venue, Flinders Park had to be expanded, and was renamed Melbourne Park. The power balance also switched this decade to the Americans, because of several titles between Jim Courier, Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi on the men’s singles side of the Australian Open Tennis Tournament. The women’s singles Australian Open Tennis Tournament pendulum swung the Americans’ way as well, with the strong emergence of Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, and Jennifer Capriati.

In 2000, centre court at Melbourn Park was christened The Rod Laver Arena, in honor of the Australian tennis hero.
