What is the Baseball World Series?
It is considered one of the most popular sporting events among its large fan base. The Baseball World Series is the championship series of the
American League vs. National League
The two MLB divisions, the American League and National League compete in a sequence of games to advance to the Baseball World Series. There are thirty MLB teams which are divided between the two leagues. The American League has 14 teams and the National League has 16 teams, which are split into three divisions grouped by geography (East, Central, and West). The National League has five teams from the east division, six from the central and five from the west. Additionally, the American League has five teams from the east division, five from the central and four from the west.
Game Progression
There are three series of games played by both leagues to determine the winner of the Baseball World Series. The first round includes the thirty teams of the American League Division Series and the National League Division Series competing in the best of five games. The thirty teams compete in the regular season with the goal to advance to the post-season playoffs and ultimately make it to the Baseball World Series. Eventually, there are only eight winning teams who can proceed to the next round, the Championship series playoffs. The first six teams include both the National and American leagues three division champions. The remaining two teams who are eligible to compete in the playoffs receive the “Wild Card.” “Wild Card” simply means that each league’s team that is not a division champion and has the top regular season record can progress to the playoffs. The playoffs consist of a best-of-seven game series played by the eight teams from both the National and American League. Accordingly, the two winners of the postseason playoffs advance to the final competition, the Baseball World Series. Finally, the Baseball World Series champion is determined by either the American or National league team winning the best-of-seven playoff games.
The Baseball World Series begins with the first two games being played in the home ballpark of the team awarded with home-field advantage in the regular season. The Baseball World Series home-field advantage is determined by the league which wins the mid-season All-Star Game. The following three games are played in the opposing team’s ballpark and the final two games if rendered necessary are played again in the first team’s ballpark.
The Baseball World Series champion team receives a World Series Trophy and rings for each player. So far, the New York Yankees have won the most Baseball World Series Championships than any other MLB team. The Baseball World Series has grown and continues to grow in popularity because of each teams home based fan support. The MLB Baseball World Series is truly one of the best championship games in the world.
