The BET Awards were established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment. The awards are presented annually and broadcast live on BET. The 2001 inaugural ceremonies were held at the Paris resort on the Las Vegas Strip. Since then the ceremonies have been held at the Kodak Theatre, and the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Some of the celebrity hosts for the awards ceremony have included Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as Jamie Foxx.

Black Entertainment Television is an American cable network based in Atlanta, Georgia which targets young African-American audiences in the United States. Robert L. Johnson founded the network in 1980, and the programming is mostly comprised of mainstream rap and R&B music videos with urban-oriented movies and TV series. The BET Awards show is a celebration of the urban attitude and unique lifestyle being represented in an artistic light through movies and music.

After stepping down as a lobbyist for the cable industry, Philadelphian Robert L. Johnson decided to launch his own cable television network. He needed a niche audience to build ratings, so he chose the African-American audience and named his channel Black Entertainment Television. BET began broadcasting as a block on January 25, 1980. Initially, the network lineup consisted of music videos and reruns of popular black sitcoms. In the 1990s it made a partnership with Starz Media to distribute movies through the premium channel called BET Movies: Starz! and was co-owned until 2001 when it was purchased by MTV’s parent company, Viacom.

The 2009 BET Award show was a tremendous success, highlighting several new artists in 15 individual categories. The Viewers’ Choice award went to T.I. for his song “Live Your Life” featuring Rihanna. Other award recipients included Keri Hilson for Best New Artist, M.I.A. for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Lil’ Wayne for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, and Ne-Yo for Best Male R&B Artist.

The show also presented several highly anticipated performances by artists such as Drake, Keyshia Cole, Jay Z, Maxwell, and many more. Along with giving out awards based on artistic abilities, the BET Award show also recognizes profound community leaders. Mayor-elect James Young was identified as a community hero for being the first Black mayor in the central Mississippi town of Philadelphia. Another group known as the O’Jays received the Lifetime Achievement award to commemorate their massive success over the course of the years with their R&B musical inspiration. The 2009 Humanitarian Award honored Alicia Keys, a triple threat musician-singer-songwriter who has diligently worked to expand diversification through her philanthropic efforts. For her dedication to her selected causes and the inspiration she has become to audiences worldwide, Alicia Keys was the obvious person to receive this year’s BET Humanitarian Award.
