The Cannes Film Festival has become an international creativity landscape in today’s world of cinematography. The festival provides a sort of rendezvous for those interested in the art and influence of the movies. Like other film festivals, it is a worldwide marketplace where producers and distributors are able to exchange ideas, view films, and sign contracts. It is also a crucial place for talent in the acting business to be seen and recognized for future endeavors.
The Cannes Film Festival is privately held usually in May at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres in the resort town of
The original Festival International du Film was scheduled to begin in 1939, but due to World War II, the launch date was delayed. Finally, on September 20, 1946 the Festival de Cannes opened its doors as the first great international cultural event of the post-war period. Sixteen different nations were represented at the affair. Since then, the Cannes Film Festival has taken place every year since as an artistic showcase of premier filmmaking and is now one of the world’s oldest, most influential film festivals.
Another interesting fact: in 1962 the International Critics’ Week was born, created by the French Union of Film Critics as the first parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival. Its goal was to showcase first and second works by directors from all over the world, not succumbing to commercial tendencies. That next year, Olivia de Havilland was named the first female president of the festival. She costarred in the epic film “Gone with the Wind” along with legends Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable.
Not all of the featured films are very well known before the event, however many of the showcased films are highly anticipated due to massive media exposure. In 2009, the film “Inglorious Bastards” directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Brad Pitt received an award for Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival. It became a highly anticipated new project in the public eye and did extremely well in theatre. The non-public festival is always attended by many movie stars and is a popular venue for film producers to launch their new films and attempt to sell their works to the distributors who come from all over the globe.
