The Country Music Association Awards, better known as the CMA Awards, are held annually in October or November, and are voted on by business members of the Country Music Association. The first CMA Awards was un-televised event in
The CMA Awards feature 12 categories: Entertainer, Male/Female Vocalist, Vocal Group, Vocal Duo, Single, Album, Song, Music Event, Music Video, Musician, and the Horizon Award. The Horizon Award is awarded to the artist, who for the first time has demonstrated the most significant creative growth and development, in overall chart activity, live professionalism, and media recognition. The eligibility period for the CMA Awards is July 1-June 30 of the following year. Albums, singles, music videos, etc., must have been released during these dates.
The CMA Award nominees and winners are voted on by County Music Association’s Board of Directors. Each CMA member may nominate one act in each category on the first ballot. Any that receive 10 votes becomes an official nominee. The nominees for the CMA Award are submitted to the entire CMA membership on the second ballot. On the second ballot, CMA members must vote for five nominees in each category. The five receiving the most votes in each category are listed as finalists on the third ballot. In the final CMA Award ballot casting round, the CMA members vote on one nominee in each category to determine the winners. The CMA Awards balloting process is conducted and certified by the international accounting firm, Deloitte & Touche LLP.
In 1972, the CMA Awards switched from NBC to CBS, until 2006, when the CMA's moved over to ABC. The CMA Award broadcast expanded from 60 minutes to 90 minutes, and 1978, the CMAs were simulcast on radio for the first time. The CMA Awards expanded for a second and third time in 1988 and 1993 to two hours and three hours, respectively. 2005 saw the CMAs move to
