Corporate Rewards

What Can Corporate Rewards Do?

Corporate rewards cannot do everything.  They cannot fix a broken system.  They are meant instead to improve the functioning of a system that is already functioning and well put together.

Looking at what you are trying to improve and then deciding if these improvements are within the sway of corporate rewards is the key to understanding if corporate rewards are the best way to deal with your problems.

Understanding Goals

First, you will have to decide what your goals are.  Maybe you want to increase your sales.  Perhaps you want to improve your customer service.  Whatever your goals, they need to be clearly defined if you also want a clear path to reaching those goals.  Once you have your goals outlined then you can begin asking the important questions.

Are these goals achievable?  Who can achieve them?  What will you have to do in order to inspire these employees to reach these goals?

You will want to consider just how much work employees will have to put in to achieve the goals that you envision.  You also want to consider the amount of time that achieving these goals will take.  A goal without a deadline leaves that goal floating in the ether without true direction and substance.

You want to consider the ramifications if these goals are not met.  It is possible that you are striving for new industry standards.  It is possible that the goals you are laying out have never been met by your company or any company in your field before.

You need to take an honest look at your current situation both within your company and within your industry to see if there are any outside factors that could impede your progress toward your goals.  You do not want to set your sights on your greatest sales ever if you are heading into a time of year that is known for slowed sales.  You may set these goals, but realize that you are attempting to swim upstream.

Create Clearly Defined Goals

Another essential aspect of this process is creating goals that are clearly defined.  Wanting to do better than ever is great, but is hard to quantify.  How much better do you want to do?  Are there any concrete ways to measure your performance levels?  If there are ways to measure performance then what performance levels would you like to attain?

Just remember that you do not want to set impossible goals.  This can have the unintended effect of decreasing motivation.  If you cannot win then why try?

Get Feedback

Ask the employees for whom you are setting goals what they think of the goals you would like to set.  Are they attainable?  Would some other set of goals be more realistic?  What would it take for your employees to reach these goals?

Allowing your employees to have input will make them feel that they are part of the process of creating corporate rewards and not just responding to someone else's idea of what their work should be.  If they have a personal stake in creating goals and the corporate rewards that go with them then they will have a personal stake in achieving them.

Corporate rewards cannot do everything.  They can, however, help you to make great strides with your business.
