The Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, or more commonly known as the Critics’ Choice Awards, is an annual award ceremony held to honor the year’s finest achievements in cinematography. Nominees are selected for the Critics’ Choice Awards by written ballots in a week-long voting session held by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, which is made up of over 200 television, radio, and online film critics from the US and Canada. The winners are revealed at the Critic’s Choice Award show and broadcasted live on the VH1 television network from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

The Critics’ Choice Awards show began with the intention of rivaling the Golden Globes ceremony, and over the past decade has become a parallel event in the entertainment industry. Two broadcast film critics named Joey Berlin and Rod Lurie first launched the Hollywood show in December of 1995 as a brand new scene for recognizing cinematic success.

Since its inception in 1995, the Critics’ Choice Awards has become a star-studded event during the movie awards season and is actually the first major awards show of the year. The BFCA consistently chooses nominees and winners that go on to earn more Academy Award nominations and wins than any other of the movie awards shows. It provides television viewers with their first opportunity to see all the top awards season contenders in one place. The show just keeps getting bigger and better, escalating into one of the hallmarks of the film awards season.

The Critics’ Choice Awards are always a hot ticket event for entertainment A-listers and celebrity socialites. The evening usually begins with stars strolling down the red carpet, posing for photos and discussing their upcoming plans. Award shows are generally a media frenzy, with photographers and reporters all seeking the latest Hollywood news. At the most recent 2009 ceremony, the masterpiece “Slumdog Millionaire” made a clean sweep through almost every award category. Some of the other popular competitors at the 2009 show included Brad Pitt for his role in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” as well as Sean Penn who received Best Actor for his role in “Milk”. More illustrious show-goers consisted of Cate Blanchett, Clint Eastwood, and Meryl Streep. However, the most stirring moment likely to go down in history was the emotional standing ovation tribute to the late Heath Ledger for his critically acclaimed work in “The Dark Knight”. The film’s director Christopher Nolan accepted the Best Supporting Actor award on Ledger’s behalf, as well as another trophy for the Best Action Movie. The 2009 14th annual Critics’ Choice Awards honored cinematic excellence in 17 total categories.
