Daytime Emmy Awards Overview

The Emmy Awards are an American television production award show; the television equivalent of the Oscars. The Emmy Awards are broken up into two awards; the Daytime Emmy and Primetime Emmy Awards. The Daytime Emmy Awards are present by the New York based National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Los Angeles based Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for daytime excellence. 

The first Daytime Emmy Award was given out during the Primetime Emmys, in 1972. “The Doctors” and “General Hospital” were nominated for Outstanding Achievement in a Daytime Drama. The first separate Daytime Emmy Awards show was in 1974 from Channel Gardens at Rockefeller Center in New York City. In 2006, the Daytime Emmy Awards were held in the Kodak Theatre, the first time they had ever been held outside of New York. Currently, the Daytime Emmy Awards take place at Radio City Music Hall, with occasional broadcasts from Madison Square Garden. Originally, the Daytime Emmy Awards were aired during daytime hours, except for the 1983 and 1984 Daytime Emmy Awards, which were not televised. In 1991, the Daytime Emmy Awards moved to a nighttime broadcast.

From 1973 until 2002, individual performers were responsible for submitting themselves for a Daytime Emmy Award nomination. Performers had to present videotape from two episodes within that particular calendar year, featuring extra footage which did not contain them edited out, and choose in which category to submit their work. Then their names would be marked on the appropriate ballot for a nomination. The top five made it on the final voting ballots, and the Emmy Academy would vote for a winner. In 2003, the Emmy Academy made a change, and formed “The Screen Panel”.  There are two panels; one in New York and one in Los Angeles. Equal members from each show review footage and make one vote from each category. The top picks from each category are the final nominees in each particular group. The final step in the Daytime Emmy Award process uses another panel, “The Blue Ribbon Panel”. Each judge in the panel reviews each nominee, and then submits a vote for who they think does exceptional work in each category. The nominee with the most votes is ultimately the Daytime Emmy Award winner.

Some of the categories included in the Daytime Emmy Awards show are: Outstanding Daytime Drama Series, Outstanding Game/Audience Participation, Lead Actor/Actress in a Drama Series, Supporting Actor/Actress in a Drama Series, Younger Actor/Actress in a Drama Series, Game Show Host, and more. The Emmy Award itself is a statuette of a winged woman holding an atom. The wings represent the muse of art; the atom, the electron of science. The Emmy Award statuette was created by television engineer Louis McManus. Weighing five pounds, the Emmy Award statuette is made up of different metals-copper, silver, nickel-covered in 18 karat gold.
