Employee Awards
Employee Awards
Employee awards are all about competition. Everyone would like to be the best, but when you are awarding the top performer then there can only be one. The motivational effect of competition draws employees in for several reasons both remunerative and emotional. Understanding these reasons may allow you to use employee awards as an impetus toward improved performance more effectively.
Winning The Prize
When the employee award is a prize then this aspect of the motivation is clear. The employees want to be the one who gets something extra for their hard work. They may be chasing after a cash bonus or a gift card. Everyone loves to win something and to be rewarded for their hard work. This simple aspect of motivation is not to be forgotten.
This desire to win the prize is heightened when the incentive has an element of prestige. Cash may carry a hint of prestige, but an incentive in the form of a vacation fairly reeks of prestige. When only one employee can perform well enough to win a trip then the joy of winning that trip is elevated. The employee who manages to win this prize also wins bragging rights. Who wouldn't be jealous of a free vacation?
Pride
There is an element of pride in winning an employee award as well. This is true regardless of what this particular award may be. For those who take pride in their work, there is no better opportunity to show off their skills then in a setting where they are in competition with their peers, especially when the results are tallied along the way. Everyone can see each employee's level of performance lined up next to everyone else's. This is an indisputable indicator of who is doing their work most effectively.
It becomes a status symbol. When employees are not fully aware of each others' performance then they are on level ground. The work that they do is not being measured against anyone else's in a visible way so they can be content with less work. They may even become apathetic.
When a competitive atmosphere is fostered, however, there is no denying the quality of an employee's work. Each employee either keeps up with the rest or publicly admits lesser results. For those who are determined to come out on top, this type of atmosphere can push them to productivity levels beyond that which they have previously reached.
Recognition
Aside from a private feeling of pride, winning employee awards gives the employee public recognition. The employee awards may be accompanied by a plaque or by a special luncheon in the winning employee's honor. No matter how the winner is recognized, that recognition contributes to the feeling of pride for the winning employee and to the desire of other employees to be the winner next time.
Employee awards improve employee performance because employees want to win the prize, to have a sense of pride in their accomplishments, and to be recognized by their peers and the higher ups in the company.
