Employee incentive programs are a great idea.  You can get more out of employees if you offer them special incentives to go above and beyond their usual work performance. 

 

The problem is that not all employee incentive programs are as effective as you would like them to be.  So how do you make employee incentive programs work?

 

Make Incentives Clear And Simple

 

In order for an incentive to be appealing, it has to be clear how that incentive can be attained.  If the criteria for achieving an incentive are too complicated then employees will have trouble understanding them and will not feel motivated. 

 

Employees have to have the ability to track their progress towards a goal easily so that they can clearly see how the work that they do is leading toward chances for greater things.  Putting numerous restrictions or conditions on employee incentive programs makes them seem unattainable and undoes any motivation the program may have provided. 

 

Gear Incentives To You Employees

 

If you want to provide desirable incentives then you need to know what your employees want.  If you provide what you think they should want instead of what they actually want then you will not be providing sufficient motivation. 

 

Also, if the incentives that you offer only appeal to a minority of your employees then you will not be tapping into the full potential of your employee incentive program.  Finding out what employees want is not difficult.  All you have to do is ask.

 

It may be easy to just pick what you think employees want, but personalities vary.  Some individuals may prefer tickets to an event while others may desire recognition.  The motivating factors for individuals can change from one setting to the next so take the time to line up the incentives with what the employees really want.

 

Don't Expect Incentives To Make Up For Anything

 

Incentive programs can do a lot for your business, but they cannot do everything.  They take a good business and make it better, but they cannot take a business that does not provide the tools for success and make it a success anyway.  Incentives improve an already well run business.  They do not work genuine miracles.

 

Employees must be treated well on a day to day basis.  It does not matter how many employee incentive programs you implement if you do not provide the basic necessities.  Employees need to be treated with respect and appreciated for the work they do. 

 

You need to begin with the proper employees while providing them with proper training and all the tools that are necessary for them to succeed.  Employee incentive programs can achieve remarkable results, but they cannot replace the basics of good business management. 

 

Employee incentive programs work best when the path to the incentives is clear and simple.  Also, the incentives to be earned must be geared toward who your employees are and what really motivates them.  Employee incentive programs can work wonders if you begin with a business that already has a good foundation.
