Employee Motivation

Employee Motivation

Employee motivation is one of those intangible phrases that seems elusive sometimes.  How do you motivate employees day in and day out?  Do you need to give all your employees a pat on the back for everything they do, or is this too much?  What does it take to keep employee motivation going?  The answers to these questions are many of the answers to how you run a successful business.

Be An Example

People are influenced by the people around them and by the people above them.  If their co-workers love their jobs then they are more likely to love their job.  Attitude is highly contagious especially when you are surrounded by the same people with the same attitudes every day.

Your enthusiasm and love for your work will rub off on everyone around you just as how you treat people will have an effect on how your employees will treat people.  You should always treat you employees the way you would want them to treat each other and the way you would want them to treat customers.

Give your employees respect, responsibility, and trust in their ability to come through.  They will live up to your expectations, or they will live down to your expectations.  Expect the best, and you will get it.

Find Common Goals

The goals of the company and the goals of its employees always have common ground.  If you find that common ground and emphasize it then employees will see how their work to benefit the company will benefit them personally.

Keeping this in the general awareness in a positive way helps employees to remember that the company depends on them and their efforts to be a success.  People lack motivation when they feel like what they do does not matter.  Remind employees that the success of the company depends upon them and the work that they do.

Praise them for accomplishments and set goals.  Knowing that these goals are in everyone's best interests will remind you that you are all on the same team.  Being in this together can be highly motivational.

Use Incentives

Incentive programs work wonders for employee motivation.  Employees may work below capacity because they feel like additional work is not rewarded.  Incentive programs allow you to reward extraordinary efforts any way you choose.

Be careful about using money as a bonus because it can be seen as another part of an employee's salary and not as an incentive.  Products and larger incentives such as tickets to sporting events have much greater appeal.

Employees will work harder for an experience many times than they will for a lump sum of cash.  They may not be able to obtain tickets to some sporting events on their own, and this fact gives those tickets value far beyond their actual cost.

Employee motivation is an elusive creature that does not have to be.  You just have to be an example, find common goals, and use incentive programs to inspire greatness.  Employee motivation is not as hard as you think.  Most employees are waiting for their chance to show that they can do more.
