When we think of the FIFA World Cup, the first thoughts that might pop into our minds are Champions. Champions clearly define the dedication and hard work that makes the FIFA World Cup such an exceptional and eminent event. Since the first game in 1930, the FIFA World Cup has become one of the world’s most popular international sporting events in history. Every year a FIFA World Cup is held, the location of the host is varied among international countries. Although the final tournament is held every four years, the FIFA World Cup competition begins three years prior. Since 1930, the FIFA World Cup has participated in sixteen games with qualified international teams representing 32 countries.

The FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) includes 207 international teams that compete to qualify to the FIFA World Cup. Of the 207 teams, only 32 are qualified to participate in the international FIFA World Cup event. Over the three prior years, the teams trying to advance to the final competition diligently train and compete in many tournaments that lead either to elimination or succession to the FIFA World Cup.

Progressing to the FIFA World Cup is not the only difficult mission to accomplish; dividing the teams into appropriate categories also plays a significant role. After having 32 participants, the FIFA World Cup competitors are divided into eight groups of four teams, with no team from the same country being allocated in the same group. The teams are then arranged into four pots that permit them to advance to the FIFA World Cup competition. The highest eight ranked teams including automatically the current hosting FIFA World Cup country, are allocated into Pot 1. The remaining teams of the FIFA World Cup are dispersed into pots 2, 3, 4 in a manner that adequately assures the best possible geographic allocation in the groups. In order to determine the position of the 24 remaining teams in pots 2, 3, and 4 within the drawn group, eight pots contain position numbers named A thru H. So far, only seven different countries have won the FIFA World Cup title: Brazil, Germany, Italy, Uruguay, Argentina, and England and France.

It is evident that the teams who progress to the FIFA World Cup finals did not experience an easy road to their victory. With the hard work each country demonstrates, the FIFA World Cup bestows a national gratification and enthusiasm among the tournament’s fans. Today, the FIFA World Cup is known to acquire a greater abundance of fan coverage than the renowned Olympic game. The FIFA World Cup is much more than just a tournament, it also involves experiencing the culture of the hosting country and experiencing the labor put into the victory of the reigning champion.

The FIFA World Cup continues to amaze and broaden its horizons over time. The future is extending the hosting countries by appointing South Africa for the first time in the FIFA World Cup Soccer history to be crowned as host in 2010.  What started out as an event only seen by 300 viewers, has transformed into a great sport viewed world wide.
