The Indy 500 Festival is a non-profit volunteer organization created in 1957 to organize civic events celebrating the Indy 500. Beginning in 1957, and now leading up to the Indy 500 Festival’s 50th year, the Indy 500 Festival has grown to be the largest festival in the nation. The Indy 500 Festival runs the entire month of May.
There are several events during the Indy 500 Festival that should spark the enthusiasm of racing fans attending the Indy 500. Some Indy 500 Festival events are also family oriented. One Indy 500 Festival event is the OneAmerica Indy 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, a 13.1 mile run through the streets of downtown
Another Indy 500 Festival event for the kids is Kids’ Day. Kids’ Day consists of mini-car racing, arts and crafts, entertainment, face painting, and more. The Princess Program is apart of the Indy 500 Festival, where 33 female college students are chosen, based on their G.P.A’s., college activities, and interviews, to represent the Indy 500 Festival and Indy 500 race. The Princesses of the Indy 500 Festival’s duties include volunteering at the Indy 500 Festival events, attending Pole Day at the Indy 500, and participating in the Indy 500 Festival parade.
Breakfast at the Brickyard is a fan favorite at the Indy 500 Festival, because fans get the opportunity to eat breakfast with community leaders and racing legends. A Memorial Day Services takes place at the Indy 500 Festival, and fallen and active soldiers are honorably recognized at a ceremony held on the front steps of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in downtown Indianapolis. Community Day is another fan favorite at the Indy 500 Festival, because it allows fans an insider view of the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in their own cars, four days before the actual race. This Indy 500 Festival event includes admission into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.
The Indy 500 Festival parade occurs the day before the Indy 500. In this Indy 500 Festival parade there are floats, nationally-known celebrities, and costumed characters for the kids, marching bands, patriotic units and more. The Indy 500 Festival’s black tie gala is the Snakepit Ball. This Indy 500 Festival party is a high energy affair. Recent entertainment included KC & the Sunshine Band. Celebrities frequent this Indy 500 Festival gala, such as legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, NBA Denver Nuggets star Carmello Anthony, Good Morning America anchor Marisol Castro, many ABC Daytime television stars, and more.
