Supersonic business jet anyone??
The Concorde may be history, but the dream of nonmilitary supersonic flight still lives. Meet the supersonic business jet.
In the mind's eye, it gleams. It hasn't yet been built, but already the airplane speaks of performance, power and naked privilege like no sports car, penthouse or yacht ever could. The aircraft being devised in the inner sanctum of Lockheed Martin's legendary Skunk Works will be sleek. It will be expensive. Most of all, it will be fast--faster than any private airplane now in existence, faster even than many of the world's military jets. In fact, the new business jet will fly at near-Concorde speeds: It will be the world's first supersonic jet an individual can own.
It will help to be a rich individual. The estimated asking price for the supersonic business jet (SBJ) is $100 million. The delivery date is still uncertain, since the Skunk Works has wrapped the SBJ in the secrecy that's a hallmark of its Palmdale, Calif., headquarters. "All that we are saying is that we are exploring supersonic suppression technology that can be applied to either government or commercial contracts," says Skunk Works spokesperson Dianne Knippel. "If you're asking, 'Are you specifically working with a commercial customer for a business jet?'--I can't answer that."
Well...if owning an SBJ sounds a little out of range there is always the Private Jet Charter option. Without the cost of owning your own Private Jet, one call can have you wheels up in no time and enjoying what is reserved only for the elite.
