Kentucky Derby Hats

One of the most interesting Kentucky Derby traditions is the wearing of Kentucky Derby hat, worn for getting into the Kentucky Derby spirit and for fun. The Kentucky Derby hats are mostly worn by women, but men are starting to get into the classic Kentucky Derby hat ritual.  

Inside the Churchill Downs clubhouse and paddock, the Kentucky Derby hats are typically classy and elegant; where as the Kentucky Derby hats found on the infield speak of zanier tastes.  The most popular Kentucky Derby hats worn during the Kentucky Derby are southern-belle styled with wide, stiff brims, and some Kentucky Derby hats are adorned with flowers, silk ribbons, rhinestones and other embellishments. Kentucky Derby hats also are seen in couture and humorous styles, such as Kentucky Derby hats sporting horses, trophies, and jockeys. Kentucky Derby hats are also thought to improve luck at picking the winners of the Kentucky Derby.

 

Here are a few tips for those joining the Kentucky Derby hat parade.

 

#1. Kentucky Derby hats should not be worn as an everyday hat.

 

#2. The bigger the Kentucky Derby hat, the better.

 

#3. To find the perfect Kentucky Derby hat, look for hat designers who will custom design your hat.

 

#4. Take a large plastic bag and fold it as small as possible. Slip it into a handbag or pocket, just in case there is rain.

 

#5. Take two large hat pins to secure your Kentucky Derby hat if there is wind.

 

The Kentucky Derby Museum also runs a “Derby Hat Exhibit Contest” during their Private Luncheon on Oaks Day (day before the Kentucky Derby), and looks for 20-30 Kentucky Derby hats that represent the spirit of the Kentucky Derby. All types of Kentucky Derby hats are welcome, designer and novelty (men’s and ladies), but only two Kentucky Derby hats per person can enter. The judging of the Kentucky Derby hats occur in June, and winning hats are on display at the Kentucky Derby Museum for one year. Kentucky Derby hat contest winners also receive two complimentary passes to the Kentucky Derby Museum, and a certificate stating that their Kentucky Derby hat was on parade at the Kentucky Derby Museum.
