Major League Baseball’s annual All Star Game is a baseball game between players from the American and National Leagues, in which the starting line-up is voted upon by the fans. The pitchers and back up players are selected by the manager and other MLB players. The MLB All Star Game is a midway point in the Major League Baseball season of 162 games, most times occurring in early to mid July. Recently there has been more significance added to the game. Since 2003, the MLB All Star Game has been used to establish home field advantage for that year’s World Series.

The MLB All Star Game dates back to 1933, when the game first appeared in the World’s Fair in Chicago, Illinois. Arch Ward, sports editor for the Chicago Tribune during that time period, can be credited with the creation of the “Mid Summer Classic”. The MLB All Star Game was supposed to be a one time event, but the success led to its’ annual inception.

The location of the MLB All Star Game is chosen by Major League Baseball, and alternates from American to National every year. If the MLB All Star Game is played in an American League city, then both teams have to use a designated hitter (DH) for pitchers, as is custom in American League play. In a National League city, the opposite stands. Pitchers from both teams are written in the line-up to hit, but pinch hitters take their places.

The leagues’ champion manager from the previous year manages the team. Fan voting takes a major role in choosing the starting line-up for the MLB All Star Game. The ballets are usually handed out at baseball venues before mid-season, and voting is conducted on the Internet.  The fans also vote on a designated hitter (DH) if the MLB All Star Game is played in an American League city. MLB players are involved in this process too; they vote on the pitchers and one back up player. The managers decide in the rest of the 31 man roster.

There are other activities that surround the MLB All Star Game. An All Star Futures Game is held during All Star weekend. Players chosen from the minor leagues are divided into two teams; one showcasing US players and the other, players from different countries. A celebrity softball game takes place two days before the MLB All Star Game. It features past and present players from the hosting city’s MLB team, and celebrities from all sides of the entertainment industry. From film, music, and television, the stars come out to play ball. The biggest event besides the MLB All Star Game itself is the Home Run Derby, which occurs one day before the MLB All Star Game. Eight top home run hitters compete to see who can hit the most home runs. Before 2004, the eight home run hitters were divided down the middle; four from the American League and four from the National League. In 2005, the rules changed, and the top eight contestants began to represent their home countries.
