New York Fashion Week is a major fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, which allows fashion designers or “houses” to display their latest collections in runway shows and buyers to take a look at the latest trends. Most importantly, it informs the industry as to what’s “in” and what’s “out” for the season. The most prominent fashion weeks are held in the fashion capitals of Milan, London, New York City, and Paris. New York has held the event twice a year in Bryant Park, an 8-acre park that gets temporarily converted into an enormous fashion arena with air-conditioned white tents. It is one of the four major fashion weeks in the industry and was recently branded Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week by the newest sponsor. Fashion Week is an excellent opportunity for American, as well as a few international, designers to showcase their upcoming collections. Famous designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Zac Posen, Badgley Mischka, and many others use this well-known venue to introduce their new styles to fashion lovers around the globe.

The first New York Fashion Week, then called Press Week, was the world’s first organized fashion week. It was held in 1943, designed to attract attention away from French fashion during World War II when fashion industry insiders were unable to travel to Paris to see French fashion shows. Fashion publicist Eleanor Lambor organized the event she called Press Week to showcase American designers for fashion journalists, who had previously neglected their innovations. Press Week was an instant success and fashion magazines like Vogue, which were normally filled with French inspirations, began to increasingly feature new American fashion.

In 1993, the event was moved to its current site in Bryant Park, however due to pressure from Bryant Park management, New York Fashion Week will be hosted in Damrosch Park at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts starting in 2010.

The fashion shows are an entertaining event, filled with atmospheric music and unique lighting. Each individual tent is complete with a runway, audience seating, and backstage areas where all the magic happens! The Fashion Week shows are invitation-only and each fashion designer is responsible for the guest list. The press writes about and photographs the runway collections for newspapers, magazines, internet, and television so the general public can see what is going on in fashion.

Audience attendance typically includes accredited journalists, editors, buyers, celebrities, and social types. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Julia Stiles, and Amanda Bynes were just a few celebrity fashionistas present at the 2009 spring show.
