The Ryder Cup is a team golf tournament played biennially with professional golf players from Europe and the United States. The Ryder Cup Golf tournament began in 1927, after its’ expedition match in 1926, on East Course, Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey, UK. The Ryder Cup matches are sponsored by the PGA of America and PGA European Tour. The teams in the Ryder Cup are put together by country.

The beginning Ryder Cup matches were even; and after World War II, the United States’ dominance led to the British and Irish Ryder Cup team expanding to an all-Europe Ryder Cup team in 1979. The Ryder Cup team expansion brought the success of Spanish golfers, as Severiano Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido were the first Spaniards in Ryder Cup history to play in the Ryder Cup. Since 1979, the Ryder Cup European team has been represented by professional golf players from: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden. The Ryder Cup team expansion on the European side also brought more competitive match play and established European superiority in 1985, as the US Ryder Cup team did post World War II.

Understanding play in the Ryder Cup is important to the players and to the fans watching from the greens and on television. Ryder Cup matches are various golf matches between players selected from the two Ryder Cup teams (US and Europe) of twelve. The Ryder Cup matches consist of eight “foursomes” matches, eight “fourball” matches, and 12 singles matches. The winner of each Ryder Cup match scores a point for their Ryder Cup team, and ˝ a point each for any Ryder Cup match that is tied after 18 holes.

A Ryder Cup “foursomes” match is a competition between two teams of two golfers. Golfers on the same team take alternate shots throughout the match; with the same ball. Each Ryder Cup hole is won by the team that completes the hole in the fewest shots. A Ryder Cup “fourball” match is also a competition between two teams of two golfers, but all four golfers play with their own ball throughout the round, rather than alternating shots. Each hole is won by the team whose individual golfer has the lowest score. A Ryder Cup singles match is a standard match between two golfers. Ryder Cup standings are determined at the end of each day.

All Ryder Cup matches take place over three days, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Ryder Cup schedule is: On Friday, the four Ryder Cup “fourball” matches and four Ryder Cup “foursome” matches happen during the afternoon. The Ryder Cup schedule for Saturday is the same, and Sunday, the 12 singles matches occur. All players don’t have to play on Friday or Saturday, because the captain of each Ryder Cup team can select any eight players for each of the four rounds of play over the two days (Friday and Saturday). If the Ryder Cup teams are tied after all match play, the team that won the previous Ryder Cup, retains the Ryder Cup trophy.
