The Screen Actors Guild Awards, otherwise known as the SAG Awards, is an annual award given by the Screen Actors Guild to recognize outstanding performances by members. The Screen Actors Guild is an American labor union, representing over 120,000 film and television principle performers and background performers worldwide. Founded in 1933, the first SAG Awards ceremony did not occur until February 25, 1995, at Stage 12, Universal Studios, and was broadcast on NBC.

Next to the Oscars and Emmy Awards, the SAG Awards ranks second in honors, and presents 13 awards for acting in film and television, from television comedy, drama, and made-for-television movies to ensemble casts in big and small screen productions. The two hour SAG Awards also gives a deserving actor or actress the Life Achievement Award, for showing the highest ideals of acting professionalism.

Voting for the SAG Awards is different from every other major Hollywood award event. Nominations for awards come from Screen Actor Guild members, a full membership that boasts up to 120,000 full-time members. Submission for works begin in July and last until October. The first stage of nominations is voted on by two nominating committees or panels selected at random by computer of April of each year. The panels consist of 2100 members each. The second stage of voting-the final balloting stage-begins once the nominations are announced in December. Ballots are prepared with the nominees and mailed one week later to the entire active Screen Actors Guild membership. The members mail the ballots back after choosing the most outstanding performances, and are tabulated.

The SAG Awards are usually held in January or February. SAG Award winners are presented with a statue named “The Actor”, a bare-chested thespian, holding the Janus masks of comedy and tragedy. The SAG Awards also benefits the Screen Actors Guild Foundation.
