A Ryder Cup “foursomes” match is a competition between two teams of two golfers. Golfers on the same team take alternate shots throughout the match; with the same ball. A Ryder Cup “fourball” match is also a competition between two teams of two golfers, but all four golfers play with their own ball throughout the round, rather than alternating shots.

How do the US PGA golf players earn points towards their Ryder Cup standing?

For every $1000 earned in any of the four majors (Masters, US Open, British Open, or PGA Championships) during 2007, one point will be awarded. For every $1000 earned in of the four majors during 2008, two points will be awarded. For every $1000 earned in any of the non-major tournaments during 2008, one point will be awarded, and for every $1000 earned in any event which is played opposite of one of the four majors during 2008, half a point will be awarded. For the of 2006 events that have already taken place, those players that have earned points and those that have finished in the top ten will receive one quarter of a point for every $1000 earned.

How is the European Ryder Cup team picked?

Five players qualify through the Ryder Cup World Points list, based on World Ranking points accumulated from All World Rank tournaments over a 12 month period. Five other players earn their Ryder Cup standing through the Ryder Cup European Points List based upon money won in the European Tour Order of Merit tournaments. The other two team members are picked by the European team captain.

Ryder Cup tickets can be obtained by registering online with the PGA, and in turn, the PGA will send Ryder Cup ticket info, including pricing at the beginning of the previous year. The Ryder Cup ticketing process happens by means of a drawing, and the Ryder Cup ticket drawing will take place in the fall before the Ryder Cup year.
