Staff Incentives
Staff Incentives
There are many different options when you decide to give staff incentives. Of course, your main reason is to inspire your employees to new level of work performance, but what kinds of incentives can you offer? Knowing some of the possibilities along with their benefits and drawbacks can help you to select the right staff incentives to motivate your employees.
Cash
Everyone loves to get cash. You can use it for anything. You could pay off bills or buy yourself something nice. It is among the best motivators.
However, it is most effective in the short term. Because this is cash in addition to your regular salary, it may be seen as just another part of your salary. This can diminish its ability to motivate employees.
This is especially true if cash bonuses are offered repeatedly. It may no longer be seen as an incentive at all but as part of a regular compensation package. This defeats the purpose of offering staff incentives.
Products
A popular product is often seen as having a greater value than the amount of cash that it takes to buy it. This is why popular products can make such great staff incentives.
One problem with choosing a product as a motivational tool is that you would need to find a product that would appeal to everyone. Otherwise, you will only be motivating a portion of your employees and not all of them. The solution is to find one product with mass appeal or to offer several different choices.
Travel
Travel incentives are eye catching. Everyone loves to get away so offering a travel incentive is very effective. A dream vacation conjures images for each employee that are the stuff of dreams. You are offering an idealized escape from everyday life that everyone will want.
The drawback is that this type of incentive could be costly. It depends on the trip that you offer, but this type of incentive is best used to motivate employees to attain long term goals. When interspersed with other incentives, travel incentives can be extremely effective.
Recognition
People like to be recognized for the work that they do. By recognizing an employee with a plaque or some other public celebration, you will be acknowledging all the hard work they have put it. It can be a matter of pride to be singled out for extraordinary efforts in the workplace.
Rewarding employees with some form of recognition is an inexpensive way to provide an incentive. All you need to pay for is the plaque or a lunch in their honor.
The drawback is that, although recognition is a nice feeling, it can feel incomplete without something more tangible. It can be a reward without a reward. Many employees will want something more.
Staff incentives come in many forms, and all have their place. Choosing the right incentives or combination of incentives can improve the performance of your employees dramatically. All you have to do is combine short term and long term incentives to keep your employees properly motivated all the time.
