Super Bowl III took place on January 12, 1969, in Miami, Florida at the Orange Bowl. Super bowl ­­III had the New York Jets versus the Baltimore Colts for the opportunity to win the third and last official AFL and NFL World Championship Game. The game adopted “Super Bowl” as the replacement name for the game. Super Bowl III was regarded as one of the biggest upsets in American sports history. Super Bowl III was the first victory for the AFL and had the lowest score to date.

The Baltimore Colts were heavily favored, because the AFL teams weren’t respected as having a high level of talent compared to the NFL. Despite that opinion, the New York Jets won 16-7, and Super Bowl III’s MVP winner, Jets quarterback Joe Namath was 17 of 28 for 206 yards, and no touchdowns. Namath predicted to an audience at the Miami Touchdown Club that his team was going to win Super Bowl III. The score in Super Bowl III was a shocker. The New York Jets won Super Bowl III, 16-7.
