Super Bowl V took place on January 17, 1971, in
All 26 AFL and NFL teams were divided into two conferences with 13 teams in each. The NFL’s Colts, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to join 10 other AFL teams to form the AFC. The remaining 13 NFL teams formed the NFC. Super Bowl V was called the “Blunder Bowl” because of horrendous play, many turnovers, and officiating mistakes. The Colts and Cowboys combined for a record 11 turnovers in Super Bowl V, and the Colts currently hold the record for the most turnovers (7) committed by a winning team. The Cowboys set a record with 10 penalties in Super Bowl V, costing 133 yards. Super Bowl V was won in the last nine seconds with a 32 yard field goal by Jim O’Brien. Super Bowl V was the only Super Bowl in which the MVP award was given to a member of the loosing team; Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley, who intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble. This was also the first time that a quarterback did not win the award.
