Super Bowl XVII took place on January 30, 1983, in Pasadena, California at the Rose Bowl. This was the seventeenth championship game of the National Football League. Super Bowl XVII pitted the National Football Conference (NFC) Champion Washington Redskins against the American Football Conference (AFC) Miami Dolphins.

Washington (12-1) defeated Miami (10-3) in Super Bowl XVII, 27-17. The Redskins scored 17 unanswered points during the second half of Super Bowl XVII, and gained a Super Bowl record 276 yards on the ground. Washington fullback John Riggins was named Super Bowl XVII MVP and broke two Super Bowl records in Super Bowl XVII: most rushing yards in a Super Bowl game (166) and most rushing attempts (38). Super Bowl XVII came at the end of a NFL season that was shortened by a strike. The 57 day NFL strike cause NFL officials to extend the regular season one weekend, moving back the start of the playoffs and eliminating the week off for the first time since Super Bowl IV.
