Super Bowl XXII

Super Bowl XXII took place on January 31, 1988, in San Diego, California at Jack Murphy Stadium. This was the twenty-second championship game of the National Football League. Super Bowl XXII pitted the National Football Conference (NFC) Champion Washington Redskins against the American Football Conference (AFC) Denver Broncos.

Washington (14-4) beat Denver (12-5-1) in Super Bowl XXII, 42-10. When Super Bowl XXII was all said and done, the Redskins, as a team, set eight Super Bowl records, and one record combined with the Broncos. Washington quarterback Doug Williams was named Super Bowl XXII MVP on 18 of 29 passing for a Super Bowl XXII record of 340 yards and one interception. With Williams’ impressive Super Bowl XXII performance, he became the first player in Super Bowl history to throw four touchdowns in a single quarter. Williams was also the first African-American quarterback to reach the Super Bowl and to date is the only one to win a Super Bowl, based on his win in Super Bowl XXII.
