Super Bowl XXIII

Super Bowl XXIII took place on January 22, 1989, in Miami, Florida at Joe Robbie Stadium. This was the twenty-third championship game of the National Football League. Super Bowl XXIII had the National Football Conference (NFC) Champion San Francisco 49ers versus the American Football Conference (AFC) Cincinnati Bengals. Super Bowl XXIII was the first Super Bowl hosted in the Miami area in ten years, and the first not to be held at the Orange Bowl.

In Super Bowl XXIII, San Francisco (13-6) defeated Cincinnati (14-5), 20-16. Super Bowl XXIII was the second meeting in the Super Bowl between the two teams; the first being seven years earlier at Super Bowl XVI. Super Bowl XXIII is remembered for its dramatic finish. The 49ers were down 16-13 with 3:10 left in the fourth quarter, and were down on their own 8 yard line. The Super Bowl XXIII champs drove 92 yards for a touchdown from Joe Montana to John Taylor with 34 seconds left in Super Bowl XXIII. Jerry Rice was named Super Bowl XXIII MVP, on 11 passes for 215 yards, one touchdown and Rice rushed once for 5 yards. Super Bowl XXIII was the final gamed coached by 49ers head coach Bill Walsh and Super Bowl XXIII was the final Super Bowl under then NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle.
