From the beginning of the UFC’s history, most martial arts UFC fighters were typically skilled in just one discipline (boxing, Judo, Jujutsu, etc), and they had little experience against opponents with different skills. At the time, there were not UFC fighter weight classes, so the UFC fighters would often face considerably larger or taller opponents. Most martial artists and UFC fighters believed that technique and skill could overtake size disadvantages. Skilled UFC fighters and martial artists could use an opponent’s size and strength against him.

UFC fighters fight in an octagonal caged enclosure called “The Octagon”, for matches. “The Octagon” is composed of an eight-sided metal fencing coated with black vinyl. The UFC fighter’s cage is six feet high, and on a platform four feet off of the ground. There is foam padding around the top of the fence and the sections of the cage. There are two entry gates, on opposite sides, and the mat, which has painted on logo, is switched for each event.

All UFC fighters must fight in approved shorts, with no shoes or foot padding. Shirt or long pants aren’t allowed of UFC fighters. UFC fighters must use approved gloves, four to six ounces that allow their fingers to grab. The gloves the UFC fighters use help them to use punching power with less risk of an injured or broken hand from bare knuckles. Although the phrase “There are no rules” is the tagline, the UFC and UFC fighters operate within limits. Among other rules, there is: No biting, no eye gorging, and techniques such as hair pulling, head butts, and groin strikes.

Currently, the UFC has weight classes for the UFC fighters. Heavyweight UFC fighters weigh 205 to 265 pounds; Light Heavyweight UFC fighters, 185 to 205 pounds; Middleweight UFC fighters, 170 to 185 pounds; Welterweight UFC fighters, 155 to 170 pounds; and Lightweight UFC fighters 145 to 155 pounds. The UFC also has a Hall of Fame, a Viewers Choice Award, and video games. Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Dan Seven, and Randy Couture are all UFC fighters that were inducted at these times, inducted UFC 45, inducted UFC 45, inducted UFC 52, and inducted The Ultimate Fighter, Season 3 Finale respectively.

The UFC Viewer’s Choice Awards was given to the top 10 most popular UFC fighters during the first ten years. Those UFC fighters are: Royce Gracie, David “Tank” Abbott, Randy Couture, Ken Shamrock, Mark Coleman, Pat Miletich, Marco Ruas, Don Frye, and Oleg Taktraov.
