UFC stands for Ultimate Fighting Championship, a mixed martial arts (MMA) organization based in the Las Vegas, Nevada and is owned and operated by Zuffa, an American based sports company specializing in the promotion of MMA. The first UFC event was November 12, 1993. Since the inception of the UFC, there have been 86 UFC events in five countries and 17 US states. 73 of those UFC events were available through pay-per-view, and 13 were on cable.

The UFC started as a tournament to find the “World’s Best Fighter”, no matter their style. UFC events were based off of Brazilian Vale Tudo fighting, and at first glance, known as “no holds barred fighting contests”-violent and vicious. Due to the extreme brutality in the UFC, and pay-per-view discontinuing their showing of the UFC fights, the UFC went into the underground circuit.

Political pressure about the violence in the UFC caused the MMA organization to reform, make stricter rules, and become sanctioned by athletic commissions. The UFC began to be marketed as a “real” or a true sporting event. UFC events also became more socially acceptable after they dropped the “no holds barred” slogan and adopted “mixed martial arts” as a replacement. During this modification period, the UFC also regained its’ pay-per-view contracts and a new cable deal. UFC programming can be seen in the United States, Australia, Britain, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Ireland, and Hungary.

The concept of the UFC tournament was the brain child of Art Davie, a Southern California advertising executive. In 1991, Davie met Rorion Gracie, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school operator in Torrance, California, and became a student of Gracie’s. After being inspired in 1992 by the Gracie’s in Action video series (featuring various martial arts masters being defeated using Jiu-Jitsu), Davie proposed an eight man, single elimination tournament. This tournament would feature martial artists from different disciplines facing each other in no holds barred combat.

Davie drafted the business plan, and 28 investors contributed the first capital to start WOW Promotions. The original intent was to turn the tournament into a television franchise. That same year, WOW wanted to have a television partner, and tried to get with TVKO (HBO), SET (Showtime), and Semaphore Entertainment Group (SEG); pay-per-view producers. SEG became WOW’s partner in 1993, and came up with the name “The Ultimate Fighting Championship” (UFC) for the show.

The first UFC event was at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado. This UFC event featured two kick boxers, Patrick Smith and Kevin Rosier; a savate black belt, Gerad Gordeau; karate expert, Zane Frazier; a shoot fighter, Ken Shamrock; a sumo wrestler, Teila Tuli; a professional boxer, Art Jimmerson; and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Royce Gracie.

This first UFC show drew 86,592 television subscribers on pay-per-view. After the UFC’s large drawing in its’ first event, and being featured in a reality television series, American Casino, it was decided that the UFC should have its’ own reality show. The reality series was named “The Ultimate Fighter”, and based on the UFC. Up and coming UFC fighters battled it out in elimination MMA matches. Spike TV picked up the UFC based reality show January 2005. The UFC also broke the pay-per-view industry’s all time records for a single year of business, generating over $222,776,000 in revenue for 2006.
