The winning tradition at the US Open Golf tournament was established in the beginning of the tournament. The first US Open Golf champion was Horace Rawlins, an English professional and an assistant at the host course. John J. McDermott became the first native born American US Open Golf champion in 1911 and repeated his US Open Golf win in 1912.
An exciting US Open Golf championship happened in 1913. Francis Ouimet, a 20 year old American amateur, defeated famous English professionals Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in a playoff. Bob Jones was a four time US Open Golf champion in 1923, 1926, 1929, and 1930. 1933 saw John Goodman become the fifth and last amateur US Open Golf champion. The other amateur US Open Golf champions were Ouimet, Jerome Travers (1915), Charles Evans, Jr. (1916), and Jones.
Ben Hogan holds four US Open Golf championships in 1948, 1950, 1951, and 1953. Arnold Palmer’s record comeback US Open Golf championship in the 1960 US Open Golf tournament was an exceptional US Open Golf championship. In the final round, he shot a 65 to come from behind from seven strokes. Jack Nicklaus was a rookie US Open Golf champion in 1962. That US Open Golf championship was the first of four US Open Golf Championships (1967, 1972, and 1980) for Nicklaus. Nicklaus is one of only four golfers to have four US Open Golf championships. Among the other four time US Open Golf champions: Willie Anderson (1901, 1903, 1904, and 1905), Jones, and Hogan.

Willie Anderson has the longest streak for consecutive US Open Golf championships at three.
