US Open Golf Winners

The winning tradition at the US Open Golf tournament was established in the beginning of the tournament. The first US Open Golf winner was Horace Rawlins, an English professional and an assistant at the host course. John J. McDermott became the first native born American US Open Golf winner in 1911 and repeated his US Open Golf win in 1912.

An exciting US Open Golf win happened in 1913. Francis Ouimet, a 20 year old American amateur, defeated famous English professionals Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in a playoff. Bob Jones was a four time US Open Golf winner in 1923, 1926, 1929, and 1930. 1933 saw John Goodman become the fifth and last amateur US Open Golf winner. The other amateur US Open Golf winners were Ouimet, Jerome Travers (1915), Charles Evans, Jr (1916), and Jones.

Ben Hogan holds four US Open Golf wins in 1948, 1950, 1951, and 1953. Arnold Palmer’s record comeback US Open Golf win in the 1960 US Open Golf tournament was an exceptional US Open Golf win. In the final round, he shot a 65 to come from behind from seven strokes. Jack Nicklaus was a rookie US Open Golf winner in 1962. That US Open Golf win was his first of four (1967, 1972, and 1980). Nicklaus is one of only four golfers to have four US Open Golf wins. Among the other four time US Open Golf winners: Willie Anderson (1901, 1903, 1904, and 1905), Jones, and Hogan.

In 1917 and 1918 there were no US Open Golf winners or wins, because play was stopped due to World War I. World War II stopped US Open Golf winners and wins in 1942-1945. Since 1950, players from only four other nations other than the United States have been US Open Golf winners. South Africa won five times since 1965. From 2004-2006, there has been a streak of three consecutive non-American US Open Golf winners, for the first time since 1910. No European player has been an US Open Golf winner since Tony Jacklin of England in 1970.

The oldest US Open Golf winner was Hale Irwin in 1990; he was 45 years old. The youngest US Open Golf winner was John McDermott; he was 19 years old. Willie Anderson has the longest streak for consecutive US Open Golf wins at three. The US Open Golf winners’ purse is around $6.8 million, and the US Open Golf winner’s share is $1.2 million.
