The US World Cup Soccer team has a long and storied history with the World Cup tournament. US World Cup Soccer play began in 1930, with the inaugural World Cup Soccer tournament, where the US World Cup Soccer team won their first match in World Cup history. They defeated Belgium 3-0. After advancing to the semi-finals, the US World Cup Soccer team lost 6-1 to a powerful Argentina team. This was the all time highest World Cup finish for the US World Cup Soccer team. Despite the loss, the US World Cup Soccer team finished third, along with fellow semi finalist Yugoslavia. There was no third place match or trophy awarded to either team and that fact makes the 1930 World Cup tournament unique.

1950’s World Cup tournament proved to be an exciting one for US World Cup Soccer, as they pulled off one of the greatest upsets in soccer history. The US World Cup Soccer team beat England 1-0. The exhilaration from that match did not last long, because the US World Cup Soccer team could not make it out of group play, with a loss to Spain. It would be four decades later until the US World Cup Soccer team would make more noise than before.

The US World Cup Soccer team qualified for the 1990 World Cup with a road win over Trinidad and Tobago, on a goal from Paul Caligiuri, known as the “shot heard around the world”. This win pushed the US World Cup Soccer team into the 1990 World Cup for the first time in 40 years. 1994 marked the first time the United States hosted a World Cup tournament, even though soccer was not among popular sports such as football, basketball, and baseball. The US World Cup Soccer teams’ host nation holds the World Cup tournament record for attendance; nearly 70,000 people attended each match. In the 1994 World Cup, the US World Cup Soccer team made it to the knockout round for the first time since 1930, but lost 1-0 to the eventual World Cup champions, Brazil.

World Cup 1998-France witnessed the US World Cup Soccer team loose all three group matches, and a last place finish. In 2002, the US World Cup Soccer team reached the quarterfinals, surprised Portugal 3-2, and tied South Korea to advance from group play. In round two, the US World Cup Soccer team beat Mexico 2-0, and eventually lost to Germany in the quarterfinals 1-0.

On September 3, 2005, the US World Cup Soccer team qualified for their 8th World Cup by beating Mexico again, 2-0, in Columbus, Ohio. Drawing Group E, the US World Cup Soccer team opened the World Cup with a 3-0 loss to the Czech Republic, then followed with a 1-1 draw against Italy, and was knocked out in its’ final group match versus Ghana, 2-1. The US World Cup Soccer team has gone winless in 1934, 1990, 1998, and 2006, which means they have not won a World Cup match on European soil.
